Lalitpur District a part of Bagmati Zone, is one of the seventy-five districts of Nepal, Lalitpur is one of the three districts in the Kathmandu Valley, along with Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. Patan officially Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City, is one of the major citie of Nepal situated about 5 km south-east of Kathmandu valley, the capital of Nepal.

Sanepa another gorgeous city is a very cheerfully populated and pleasant, secure  residential area of Lalitpur District.  Sanepa is the residential place of COAS (Chief of the Army Staff), Prime Minister Babu Ram Bhattarai, Ser Bahadur Deuwa, many civil servants of Nepal government and other officers. Head Office of Nepali congress Party and Head Office of The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) also located in Sanepa, Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City.

Lalitpur is a city of fine arts is an ancient little city that is interesting with history and heritage, epitomized by the Buddhist monuments and Hindu temples. The Patan Durbar Square is situated in the heart of the city. It is the focus of visitor’s attraction. The Square is full of ancient palaces, temples and shrines, noted for their exquisite carvings. Patan is also known as Manigal. It is best known for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its  tradition of arts and crafts. It is called city of festival and feast, fine ancient art, making of metallic and stone carving statue.

Lalitpur, since ancient times has been preserving its unique place and role in the geo-political and economic arena of the country. For many centuries, Lalitpur was a sovereign city-state. In 1768 AD, King Prithivi Narayan Shah assimilated it into the Kingdom of Nepal. According to tradition, Patan is the oldest city in the Kathmandu Valley. This claim has not been verified but the association of the four main Stupas with Ashok seems plausible.
